Fraunces Tavern Restored by Sons of the Revolution in 1907

One of John Lee Carroll's most important activities was as leader of the Sons of the Revolution, an organization composed of descendants of those who participated in the American Revolution either politically or militarily.
It is interesting that Governor Carroll chose this event to speak about the issue of immigration, which was a hotly contested issue at that moment. Immigration to the United States rose from 3 1/2 million from 1891-1900 to nearly 9 million in the period between 1901 and 1910. In 1924, fourteen years after Carroll's speech, Congress would drastically reduce the number of immigrants allowed into the country and bar Asians entirely.
