The Carrolls entertain the Vice-President, 1893


Adlai Stevenson (grandfather of the fellow who ran for president years later) was the vice-president in Grover Cleveland's third term. When asked if he had consulted frequently with his vice-president, Cleveland quipped: "Not yet, but there are still a few weeks in my term remaining." The Carrolls were quite prominent in Washington society during the Cleveland years.
